The First Drive Covenant
An agreement between and
What I promise, as the driver
- 1.I will wear my seatbelt every time, and I will not move the car until everyone else is buckled.
- 2.My phone stays out of my hands. If it needs answering, I pull over first.
- 3.I will not drive after drinking, and I will call you for a ride instead — no questions asked, no punishment.
- 4.I will tell you the truth about where I am going and who is in the car with me.
- 5.I will drive the speed the sign says, not the speed the traffic is going.
- 6.If I damage the car or get a ticket, you will hear it from me first.
What I promise, as the parent
- 1.I will teach you patiently, and I will not raise my voice in the passenger seat.
- 2.I will practice with you in the rain, at night, and on the highway — not just the easy roads.
- 3.I will come get you, anywhere, at any hour, if calling me is the safe choice.
- 4.I will model the driving I am asking of you, including the phone.
- 5.I will give you more freedom as you earn it, and tell you plainly what earning it looks like.
- 6.I will pray for you every time you take the keys.
A prayer for the first drive
Lord, thank you for this child, and for every mile that brought us here. Keep a hand on this car and on the ones around it. Give steady hands, clear eyes, and the humility to slow down. Where there is fear, give peace. Where there is confidence, give wisdom. Bring them home to us tonight, and every night after. Amen.
